THIRD-PERIOD COMEBACK GIVES RED THIRD PLACE

CALGARY, Alta. – Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, Que./Montreal, CWHL) and Jenelle Kohanchuk (Winnipeg, Man./Boston University, HE) scored goals 69 seconds apart in the final five minutes of the third period to lead Red to a 3-2 victory over Blue in the third-place game at the National Women’s Team evaluation camp on Sunday.

Kohanchuk finished with a pair of goals and Vaillancourt had a goal and an assist for Red, which outshot Blue 13-5 in the decisive third period and 32-31 overall.

Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Providence College, HE) and Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont./Burlington, CWHL) split the goaltending duties for Red, although the save of the game came from forward Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Boston University, HE), who got her leg in front of a shot from Blue’s Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont./University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) with time ticking down, Blue enjoying a 6-on-4 advantage and Irwin staring at an empty net.

Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) scored both goals for Blue, which got all of its offence from its all-Olympic line of Piper, Irwin and Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont./Brampton, CWHL). Kim St-Pierre (Chateauguay, Que./Montreal, CWHL) and Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont./Brock University, CIS) each saw 30 minutes of action in the Blue goal, with Clause making a number of huge stops early in the third period to keep her team ahead.

The win was the first of camp for Red, which dropped a 3-1 decision to Blue in the round-robin finale for both teams on Saturday.
