TEAM ATLANTIC COMES CLOSE, BUT ONTARIO RED HANGS ON FOR WIN NAPANEE, ON – Team Ontario Red survived a scare from a pesky Team Atlantic on Thursday night at the Strathcona Paper Centre. Ontario Red defeated Atlantic 2-1 to wrap up Day 2 at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship. The win means Ontario Red is 2-0 and has a chance to finish first in Group A if it defeats Saskatchewan (1-1) on Friday night. Ontario Red controlled much of the play on Thursday night, outshooting Atlantic 40-20. But Carmen MacDonald (Pictou, NS/Westminster School) was solid in the Atlantic net, making 38 saves to earn player of the game honours. Both Ontario Red goals came in the first period, with Heather Hughes (Stoufville, ON/Toronto Aeros, PWHL) and Danielle Skirrow (Trenton, ON/Durhaw West Lightning, PWHL) scoring. Following a scoreless second period, Atlantic’s Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, NS/Stoney Creek Sabres, PWHL) scored at 3:22 of the third. Friday marks the final day of preliminary action at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship. All eight teams are in action. The top two teams from each group move on to semi-finals on Saturday, with the other four teams going on to consolation games. |
