MANITOBANS HEAD HOME HAPPY WITH BRONZE NAPANEE, ON – Team Manitoba has won bronze at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship for the second-straight year. Christine Bestland (Brunkild, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers), Brittany Hergesheimer (East St. Paul, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers) and Katie Wilson (Winnipeg, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers) scored for Manitoba as it defeated Team Ontario Blue 3-1 on Sunday at the Strathcona Paper Centre. The teams played a scoreless opening 20 minutes. Bestland opened the scoring at 7:18, but Ontario Blue quickly bounced back on a goal by Sasha Nanji (Markham, ON/Mississauga Chiefs, PWHL). Hergesheimer made it 3-1 with a power play goal at 17:32 of the second. But it was Wilson’s goal at 12:59 that sealed Ontario Blue’s fate. Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers) fed a pass to Wilson in the slot, who fired it past Ontario Blue’s Jenesica Drinkwater (Brantford, ON/Stoney Creek Sabres, PWHL). “Being up 2-1 is scary,” Wilson said after the game. “Getting the third goal allowed us to relax a little bit. Meghan fed me in the slot and I was glad to put it in.” Manitoba outshot Ontario Blue 41-24. |
