TRIO OF QUEBECERS SCORE TWO GOALS DURING WIN

NAPANEE, ON – Team Quebec took a major step to winning Group B with a 6-3 victory over Manitoba on Thursday evening at the 2008 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

The game was tied 2-2 after two periods, before Quebec exploded for four goals in the third. Quebec was led by Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, QC/Selects), Audrey Gariépy (Mascouche, QC/Blues de Dawson) and Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Blues de Dawson), each of whom scored a pair of goals.

Despite the score, the game was close right up until the final minute. Team Quebec took a 1-0 lead just 2:44 into the game when Poulin scored her fourth goal of the tournament. Manitoba struck back right away as Kristin Cockerill (Winnipeg, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers) scored less than two minutes later. Quebec regained the lead on Daoust’s goal at 9:26.

Manitoba would tie the game five minutes into the second on a goal by Brigette Lacquette (Waterhen, MB/Westman Wildcats).

Quebec started the third with a goal as nice as they come. Kayla Tutino (Lorraine, QC/Ontario Hockey Academy) made a great pass to Daoust on a 2-on-1. Daoust made a great deke to her backhand and put the puck past Manitoba’s Tara Lacquette (Waterhen, MB/Westman Wildcats). Quebec’s lead was shortlived once again as Brigette Lacquette sniped her second of the game at 7:25.

From there, though, Gariépy took over, scoring Quebec’s fourth and fifth goals of the game. Poulin scored in the last minute to ice the victory.

Quebec is now 2-0 and can clinch Group B with a win over B.C. on Friday.
