2009 IIHF Ice Hockey Junior World Championship

Team Red 3 – Team White 4

WHITE HOLDS OFF RED COMEBACK TO EVEN UP INTERSQUAD SERIES

Team White is into the win column at the National Junior Team development camp in Ottawa – but just barely.

Greg Nemisz (Courtice, ON/Windsor, OHL) scored the game-winning goal with just under two minutes to go in the second period as White registered a 4-3 win over Team Red on Monday night at the University of Ottawa, gaining a measure of revenge for their 4-1 loss in the intersquad opener one night earlier.

Nemisz’s goal gave his team a seemingly insurmountable 4-0 lead, as White looked to be on its way to an easy victory before Red began its surge.

Defenseman PK Subban (Rexdale, ON/Belleville, OHL) cut the lead to 4-1 just 28 seconds after Nemisz’s goal on a penalty shot – no penalties are served during the intersquad games, penalty shots are taken instead – and third-period markers from Tyler Ennis (Edmonton, AB/Medicine Hat, WHL) and Jared Spurgeon (Edmonton, AB/Spokane, WHL) provided for a wild final 10 minutes.

But White goaltender Chet Pickard (Winnipeg, MB/Tri-City, WHL) shut the door the rest of the way, evening up the intersquad series at a game apiece ahead of Tuesday night’s camp finale (6:00 p.m. ET, University of Ottawa Sports Complex).

Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, ON/University of Michigan, CCHA) opened the scoring for Team White on a penalty shot less than three minutes after the game’s opening face-off, and Alex Pietrangelo (King City, ON/Niagara, OHL) and Kyle Turris (New Westminster, BC/University of Wisconsin, WCHA) added goals in the second period to join Nemisz on the scoresheet.

Tyson Sexsmith (Priddis, AB/Vancouver, WHL) got the call between the pipes for Team White before giving way to Pickard, while Jake Allen (New Maryland, NB/St. John’s, QMJHL) and Dustin Tokarski (Watson, SK/Spokane, WHL) split the duties for Team Red in a losing cause.

Ennis led the way with a goal and an assist for Team Red, while Chris Terry (Brampton, ON/Plymouth, OHL) chipped in with a pair of helpers.

Tickets for Tuesday night’s final game are available at the door for $10, while children 12 and under get in free.
